Common questions
Everything about Malaysia business setup costs
Questions about the numbers? Here are the most common things people ask before setting up a company in Malaysia.
View Company Registration GuideHow accurate is this calculator?
The estimates are based on verified SSM government fees and typical market rates from licensed company secretaries and registration firms in Malaysia as of 2026. Government fees (SSM, LHDN registration) are fixed — professional service fees (company secretary, accounting, consultants) vary by provider. What is the cheapest way to register a company in Malaysia?
The minimum cost to register a Sdn Bhd is RM 1,050 in government fees (RM 50 name reservation + RM 1,000 incorporation). Add a mandatory company secretary at RM 1,200–3,600/year and a registered address at RM 600–1,500/year. The minimum realistic year-one cost for a lean foreign-owned Sdn Bhd is around RM 3,000–4,000.
Is a company secretary included in the SSM fee?
No. The SSM incorporation fee covers only the government registration cost. A company secretary is a separate, mandatory professional appointment under the Companies Act 2016. You must engage one independently — they range from RM 1,200 to RM 3,600 per year depending on the level of service and their firm’s size.
Do I need RM 500,000 to set up a company in Malaysia?
Not always. The statutory minimum paid-up capital for a Sdn Bhd is just RM 1. However, RM 500,000 is the minimum required to apply for the MTEP business visa — which allows you to live in Malaysia as the business owner. If you’re a remote owner with no plans to relocate, you can start with RM 1 or any amount appropriate to your business size.
Are there ongoing annual costs after registration?
Yes. Every Sdn Bhd must pay annual company secretary fees, file an Annual Return with SSM, maintain a registered office address, and submit audited financial statements to SSM and LHDN each year. These annual compliance costs typically range from RM 3,000–8,000 depending on your company size and service providers.
